Counterfeit listings are frequently hidden from the brand that would report them and shown normally to everyone else. Checking from ordinary residential addresses is how you see what shoppers see.
How Sellers Hide From You
Cloaking against a brand's own network is routine. Corporate address ranges are easy to identify and cheap to suppress, so the listing disappears for anyone checking from head office while remaining live for the market. Search placement can be filtered the same way. The result is a monitoring programme that reports everything is fine because it is being shown a curated version of the site.
Running A Sweep
Work marketplace by marketplace and market by market, using residential exits in each. Capture three things together: the listing itself, the seller profile, and the exit location and timestamp — a screenshot without provenance is not much use in a takedown. Repeat any hit from a second address in the same market before escalating, since a single sighting can be a rotation artefact.
Residential Exits
Ordinary addresses that are not recognisable as the brand.
Per-Market Coverage
Check each country where your category is copied.
Repeatable Checks
Return from a different address to confirm a finding.
Keeping Evidence Usable
Store the full page rather than a cropped screenshot, keep the URL and seller identifier, and record the address and time in the same record. Takedown processes ask for exactly this, and reconstructing it weeks later from an image is essentially impossible.
Working With The Marketplace
Each platform has its own reporting route and its own evidence expectations, and matching them is what determines whether a takedown lands quickly. Find out what a given marketplace requires before running the sweep, then capture to that standard the first time. Re-collecting evidence after a rejected report costs more than gathering it properly, and the listing is often gone or altered by then.
Capture Every Time
- The listing page in full, not a crop.
- Seller identifier and URL alongside it.
- Exit country and timestamp in the same record.
